Duckmandu - Fresh Duck For Rotting Accordionists

I am, in all other instances, not one to post about a musician who covers other people’s songs. But when they take the Dead Kennedy’s debut album and replace the guitars with accordions, I am sorry, but there is no way that I cannot talk about it! Even more awesomely, Duckmandu singer Aaron Seeman even has a fairly similar voice to that of Jello Biafra, so with a bit of imagination, you can pretend that Fresh Duck For Rotting Accordionists is an unreleased alternate version of the original album, where they used accordions. OK… maybe more than a bit of imagination. As a bonus, at least for Doug, Jason Webley sings backing vocals on a few tracks (none of these, though).

The Cat Empire – Two Shoes

The Cat Empire - Two Shoes

It is funny that Ant has made mention of mix CDs, as I have neglected this site recently because I got caught up in making my own mix CDs for various internet folk. Nevertheless, I have been informed indirectly that I am a bum and should post more. And what luck! I have just the band for you.

So, The Cat Empire, a band from Australia that mixes all kinds of styles, such as gypsy, jazz, ska, etc., and manages to make it sound cohesive. This particular recording was done in Cuba, and their surroundings definitely seem to have left a mark on its overall tone.

They assert that we should “get so funk-inflicted it’s a crime”. Every day that passes without you listening to this band is a travesty.

Nanuchka / Guignol

Nanuchka / Guignol - Drink the Best Wine First

Let’s tie things in together, shall we? This 10 minute long collaboration between Guignol and Nanuchka does a good job of sounding a lot longer. Plus we’ve got Jack Terricloth (of World/Inferno, et al, though his real name is Pete) sounding in for a duet on Captain Sensible Calling.

Anyway. This kicks off with a familiar Guignol tune, but with some delicious female vocals (in Hebrew) laid over it. This works surprisingly well, though it’ll confuse your friends if you put it on in the car (I know this from experience). We then get some random instrumention, a right rocking track, and the duet of which I have already spoken.

Nanuchka claims to have a more reasonable length record out, but damned if I’ve been able to find a way to get it. They’ve got some other tracks available at their site, but they are mostly embedded in flash, so good luck! Since Red is one of them though, I have kindly provided you with a tasting right here.

Guignol

Guignol

Accordion, tuba, clarinet, etc., instruments seldom heard over the airwaves. This collection of musicians are like the village bicycle — the artists themselves mingle within other bands (World/Inferno, Anti-Social Music), as well as provide backing for various artists (Mischief Brew, Nanuchka). Additionally, they have released a self-titled collection of instrumental compositions.

You want a genre amalgamation? I would give you gypsy-punk-jazz. Except that sounds pretentious, so never mind. Listen to some clips.

Gogol Bordello

Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike

If you get excited when you hear the words “Eastern European Folk”, and have a thing for reckless fiddles and poor English, perhaps you are hanging around the types of people your mother warned you about. Also, you may like Gogol Bordello.

These guys have released a good amount of material, but their latest offering is by far the most consistent. From Sally to Mishto! (I seem to be posting a lot of stuff that has exclamation marks), the pacing is flawless. Perhaps Eugene Hutz’ vocals or his new takes on language (undestructable?) may grate on you, but damned if they don’t have a lot of energy.

The World / Inferno Friendship Society

The World / Inferno Friendship Society - Red-Eyed Soul

Bombastic frenetic cabaret gypsy anarchist punks. A short seqence of words can do no justice to this band. Their latest offering is just more of the same, which is to say that it is yet another amazing recording. You start to get the feeling that they are descending into more poppy territory, with Velocity of Love and Your Younger Man, but Let’s Steal Everything marks them bringing it straight back to their more reckless nature. Of course, you should’ve expected this, given the opening track, Brother of the Mayor of Bridgewater.

They are the type of band who, upon having their power cut, would just come out into the audience and play and dance there where they can be heard better, accordions and horns and all. Even the most unlikely people have come to love their music, so if they’re touring anywhere near your town (and they are out on tour at this precise moment), you would be doing a great disservice to yourself to just hang out at home while they rock the pants off of everyone else.
