Gabriela Kulka reminds me of Regina Spektor, if only because they are ladies who jam out on pianos. Gabriela’s music is more of a cabaret style, which inevitably means that I like it more. And while some will certainly call it blasphemy, she is also a much better singer. Though these three songs are the only ones of hers that I like, she’s got a bunch more linked on her site. And I can’t think of anything else to say, and nobody reads this far anyway, so just grab the songs and go!

I’m fairly certain it’s not at all necessary to mention the bands that 3hive writes about, but when the bands are this good, you can’t help yourself. The fellows and one lady that comprise The Scarring Party play their own kind of superfluous genre, or at least one that I haven’t heard; they are the first band I’ve ever heard that uses an accordion, a banjo, and have vocals and lyrics that remind me of good modern cabaret (and manage to pull it off). In that sense, they remind me of Reverend Glasseye, Jason Webley, and Nicki Jaine, but not singularly. Maybe if you mixed them all together you’d have something close, but that sort of devilry is currently impossible. You can listen to Eye and Devil Knows Where on their Myspace as well.

Evidently, if I am to listen to all the music that I have on this computer, I am bound to find some good stuff. The first of these is the lovely Nicki Jaine, playing some cabaret that is certifiably dark, made more so by her vocals which sound both charming and genuinely evil. She single-handedly inspired me to scour the “dark cabaret” tag listing at last.fm, so hopefully I will find some more good stuff in the same vein as this.

And while I’m here, am I the only one who finds it strange that while the Dresden Dolls made cabaret popular again, they’re one of the most boring cabaret groups out there?
