At first glance, Dua Lipa might seem cut from the same cloth that gave the world Ariana Grande – that auto-tune driven, melodically acrobatic melting pot of music and, more crucially, image that ensures that Instagram is somehow an important service to the world. But not so! Dua Lipa comes at you with an added dosage of sharp rebelliousness, like biting into a chilli with your corn flakes or hearing a kids show presenter swear. It’s things you’re certainly familiar with and like, but with that added kick in the pants that takes it from being wholly generic to bitingly catchy.

Awwwwwww, snap! It’s time for our favourite, honey-loving bear to drop some phat beats in his incarnation as DJ Honey Potz and the Robin! Now, we all know what a remix of a cherished, childhood cartoon means: Pogo’s back in town, and he certainly doesn’t disappoint. This is equal parts dreamy, chill and magical, plus it serves to remind us all of how gosh darned friggin’ adorable silly old Pooh is! The feels are strong with this one…

I dedicate this post to Hugh because a) he’s not writing on the site currently and b) he left it in drafts as a blank post. I will do my best to channel my inner Hugh, because he is a lovely lad and ought to be channelled more often? Ok, none of this makes sense, so let’s talk about the music instead!

I did not expect Hugh to be into this kind of swanky good time. He is into swanky good times, but I figured he wouldn’t use this kind of jam at it. But what do I know? This is a rollickingly grand piece of electro-swing that’ll get you all peppy and spunky!

Sometimes, you get a little “POW!” from music; a spark that kicks you in the keister, runs up your spine and starts tap dancing in your head. Or, to put it in far less stupid terms, sometimes music just makes you go “Oooo, that’s pretty sweet!”. So with any lucky, here is some rad Swedish electro-pop that’ll hopefully give you that reaction!

There’s a big ol’ mix of crazy, punchy drumming contrasted with soothing electronic drones and wrapped up with some wild vocal work that kind of gives this tune a bit of a modern jazz feel. Something about that mix of craziness and relaxation is certainly zapping me in the keister right now!

I think I’m starting to come around on the 80s. Something about it always seemed monumentally tacky to me, particularly with music. However, between listening to more of the Split Enz back catalogue and getting deep into Stranger Things and it’s superb, synth-based score, I’ve come to realise that I have much to be thankful for of the period. My bad, 80s! Don’t judge a book by its cover and all that…

Now, this is obviously a modern tune, but it certainly has its roots in the ethereal synth drone of the 80s. Beautifully dreamy and poignant, but completely lacking the tackiness. You have floored me, Selfoss!

It’s Thursday and I’m feeling beautifully sentimental. Why? Why not, I say! To that end, I present you with more of Pogo’s work with this piece comprised of sounds and samples from the Spielberg film A.I..

Pogo has quite the knack for striking you right in the feels with his beautifully structured compositions as they tend to capture the warmth and tones of the content that’s being sampled. And hey, while people’s opinions of the film were pretty mixed (I personally love it), you can still sit back and enjoy this piece’s ability to chill you right the hell out!

OH MY GOD, THE AVALANCHES ARE BACK! ‘Tis the season for musical resurgence it seems, what with Radiohead releasing an altogether spiffing new track (and album) that I’ve yet to post about because I am quite the dunderhead, and now with the Avalanches FINALLY announcing that a new album is out next month! Oh happy days!

For the uninitiated or those who have forgotten, the Avalanches are an Australian electronic outfit, known for releasing only one, supremely excellent album in 2000 and then vanishing without a peep for many, many years. News of a follow-up album always persisted, and the flood gates have now finally broken! Here is the first single from the new album, which seems to carry the air of a Parov Stelar track, but more importantly, it suggests that something pretty awesome is on its way come July 8…

Into the 80s we go! Figuratively, that is. Never go back, people. Anyway, take a healthy dose of synth drums and a gloriously sexy bass line and mix it with some more laid back, electronic tones and sultry singing and you’ve got yourself a winner! For Esmé has evidently followed this recipe with aplomb with a tune that simply begs to be listened to at night.

Trying to lock down specific musical influences for artists these days is an inherently difficult task. I submit that this is an awesome thing: it means we’re all getting the equivalent of a musical menagerie with every new song that’s released. Not that we’re getting stuff that’s jam-packed with a thousand different styles and origins, but more that there’s a whole lot of interestin’ experimentin’ goin’ on.

With that, here are Methyl Ethel (so much fun to say), hailing from Australia with their blend of 80s electro-pop and darker synthetic tones and composition. It is all kinds of interesting and tingly, like a good coffee pared with an even better coffee.

Aww yeah! It’s Sunday night, so you’re looking to chill and hang out and forget that tomorrow is Monday, right? How about some soothing electro-pop to get that scenario off the ground? Ain’t always easy to make electro-pop seem soothing, but between the delicate vocals, the bass and not too harsh drum beat, you’ve got yourself one heck of a chilled out tune.

Can’t say I know a lot about P’ARIS yet, but they seem to be a fairly new outfit with only a handful of tunes so far. All of them seem pretty dang great, though, so feel free to dive in!
