I am no expert on the 60s, but for better or worse, I’ll try and sum it up anyway. Two songs define the era for me: Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower, and this classic by the Stones. There’s something about the feeling of depth in these tunes, coupled with a pile of bend-heavy guitar licks and the general messages of the lyrics (protest, empowerment) that create a mood that really resonates with that period of time. They go beyond being haze covered caricatures of the 60s to be something that’s as relevant today as it ever was. Granted, I wasn’t alive back then, so what do I know! What I can say truthfully is that this is my favourite Stones song EVER.
