Nervous Cabaret

Here’s a New York band that I don’t even like all that much, but they are at the very least a two-hit wonder, which immediately places them above the vast majority of bands. Their music seems like fairly standard indie rock with a horn section thrown in for diversity’s sake. What makes them more interesting in my book is their singer; I don’t know of any other modern indie band that has a Pakistani singer (one who sounds Pakistani, at that), and I don’t know of any who elevate songs about masturbation into something other than a joke. As he sings on Instant Lady, “I’m gonna work my right hand / ’cause I don’t need nobody baby!” Very classy, to say the least.
